Gateway Project Tops Out
Today the Reno-Tahoe International Airport Gateway Project topped out. The final beam was ceremonially set into place to commemorate the completion of the structure. Construction team members including the structural engineer, architect, airport management staff, airport board members, construction workers, and other VIP's were treated by the Airport Authority to a wonderful breakfast. Then the RTAA hosted a short introduction after which the final signatures were added to the beam.

It got us thinking, why top out? How did this all start? What does it mean? Some say it's tradition dating back to various cultures thousands of years ago. Many different societies throughout history have celebrated the raising of structures with celebrations and special customs. The evergreen tree is a symbol life and often represents a project with no injuries. The painting of the beam, usually gray or white primer, is so the signatures of the participants are easily visible. The flag is for patriotism.
To us we think it is a great celebration of our "behind-the-scenes" culture of service. As you move through the completed project building, that beam will be encased in the construction, an unseen symbol of all of the team's hard work. For now it is adorned with banners and stands out to passersby. Soon it will be part of the construction and invisible and we will be working on a new project! So "topping-out" is a celebration of our work, renewal, achievement and continued prosperity for all.
